Changeling
Woodblood Elemental of the Spring Court

Concept
Pyrophobic Surfer

Description
Taeho Silva appears on the surface to be just one more surfer-wannabe frat boy. He has shoulder-length shaggy chestnut hair that flashes red when the light hits it. His cocoa skin seems constantly tanned and smooth like a firm sapling. His good looks border closer to beautiful than handsomeness, and he genuinely seems unaware of the way he can turn someone’s head when he passes. He is most often seen wearing well-used sandals and a pair of cargo shorts, with a sleeveless t-shirt.

When his Mask is pulled aside, he does not appear terribly different than before his time in Faerie. The red in his hair is now accentuated and can briefly be seen as leaves when his hair moves. His skin is still firm and smooth, but appears to be made of stripped wood instead of flesh and muscle. His feet always appear dirty and slightly knobby, and the longer he stands in one spot, the more they seem to be extending roots into the ground beneath him.

Background Taeho fits the picture of the hippie frat boy that is so ubiquitous in suburban colleges across the country these nights. Usually garbed in calf-length khaki shorts and a sleeveless t-shirt, he looks equally at home with either a surfboard or a Hacky Sack. His mocha skin never seems to burn or blemish despite the constant time he spends under the sun’s rays. His shaggy hair, seemingly the same shade as his skin but with the slightest hints of amber when caught in the sunlight, brushes his shoulders whenever he moves his head. The jovial, playful look in his eyes is often complimented by the grin he is quick to show with those around him. Despite his genial good nature, and apparent social graces, it is often heard of those who have recently met him to consider whether he likes people at all. It almost seems like he is always seeking a way out of the conversation, always looking for a chance to leave.
In truth, Taeho’s uncomfortable around his mortal brethren. Raised in foster care all around southern California, he is one of the rare individuals who escaped the foster care system without too many noticeable scars. As quick as he is to welcome someone into his company, he has long found he is only truly content, and himself, when he communes with Nature. Alone. An avid surfer, hiker, and rock-climber, it was his fascination with the rapidly disappearing natural world that lead him to his Keeper’s Estate. Unlike many of the Lost, in some ways Taeho actually sought out the Gentry. It was the gradual disappearance of the world he truly belonged to, that sent him deeper and deeper into the redwood forests he had long admired. For what seemed like hours, he traveled, not noticing when the mighty trees looming overhead began twisting their trunks into unnatural positions, curving this way and that, entwined by wire like green ivy. And then the trees became truly majestic. Just as he first laid eyes on Arcadia, his Keeper came to him. It is not known, even by Taeho, what transgressed then. But a rumor holds that the young man willingly followed his new Lord even deeper into the magical wood around him that day.

Taeho’s durance would have been torture for many, but for Taeho, it was almost blissful. Shortly after his arrival into his Keeper’s Palace, he found himself in the courtyard of a gigantic Victorian mansion. In every direction he could see, greenery grew unimpeded. Hedge mages that appeared to have never been pruned, and that seemed to shake and sway even when there was no breeze to be felt, stood in one direction. In another vast flower gardens, each blossom a sickeningly bright burst of color that nearly oozed from their petals. Despite the constant presence of Nature about him though, Taeho noticed the spot he was standing was bare of much life at all. It was while examining the seeming nexus in the center of this barren area that his durance began in earnest. As soon as his feet rested on that particular spot, Taeho felt his feet begin to sink into the earth beneath him. Mild curiosity was all that prompted him to glimpse down to the dirt now covering his ankles. Roots had begun to grow from the once-barren land. Around him, life sprang up, quickly at first, and then slowing, until no discernible growth could be detected. When he raised his head again, his Keeper was gone, and he was left to his new role. Taeho lost himself willingly in this place. The other vegetation around him could never be called his friend, or even much of an acquaintance, but none grew close enough to bother him much. The grass at his feet seemed pleasant enough, perhaps for having been born of his own life-force. The leaves that now sprouted from what were once his fingers acted as if extensions of his own limbs. In this, he found peace, and tranquility. On a rare occasion another of the Gentry would take a stroll through the mighty garden, or a changeling would seek cover in its abundant foliage. The foliage usually proved to be more deadly than any pursuing Fae. And so time passed. Many lose track of the days, weeks, years while in this beautiful Hell, and Taeho was no different. Unlike many of his kin however, Taeho felt no urge, no desire, to ever leave this land that was to him Heaven. His Keeper never deigned to step foot in the garden that he so meticulously populated. No Wizened trimmed the plants, and in time Taeho began to forget about the wanton destruction that had so disturbed him back at this ‘home’. It was this oversight by his Keeper that brought reality crushing back down on Taeho’s head. It was the carnivorous hedge that sought to be his undoing. While still many yards away, it was still the closest object to his tree-body. And so when some unwitting fool started the blaze, it was the hedges that first alerted Taeho to his predicament. What seemed before to simply be a trick of the wind, proved to be the shifting and readjustment of a fully ambulatory maze of hedges. And perhaps flight from the source of the fire would not help a courtyard full of shrubbery, but that did not seem to stop the hedge from heading in Taeho’s direction.

Time had long ago begun to move at a snail’s pace, and so the necessary steps for his brain to process what it needed to do seemed to happen in slow motion. Exacerbating this problem was the realization that his feet truly had begun to root themselves into the ground all around him. They had spread too far and too deep for him to extract wholly intact. And so the once-human had to break them off at the lowest point he could reach, effectively decapitating his legs from the calves down. His elongated arms, now made of the sturdy wood he once so admired were covered in flammable appendages which needed to be torn off so as to not provide any easy access for the oncoming fire. And so wounded, and so crippled, Taeho made his escape. He did not exactly outrun the burning maze that fell upon him, but it constantly moved around him, never more than singing his bark, but always threatening him with its pyrrhic movements. He kept running as best as he could, but the maze was seemingly endless and moved around him faster than he could even have hoped to outpace. And then, as suddenly as it had begun, the maze was past him, having left him behind, scored but alive. And in the midst of a Redwood forest he had once idolized.

Storytelling Hints
Taeho is not unhappy to be returned to the mortal realm. He had not left much behind, but what he had left, he was happy to have once again. And yet… part of him was in Heaven. Part of him never wanted to move. To be rooted in that garden forever. It is, unfortunately, the greater part. But Taeho is making the most of things. He’s managed to find other Changelings in his town, and has joined the Spring Court. It is not a large Court, but it is respected in the freehold. And Taeho’s unflappable nature and his level headedness is much valued among his peers. While clearly no scholar, he is not without his wisdom and sage advice, young as he still is. Most everyone who meets him, Lost or otherwise, likes him, or at least does not see him as any kind of threat, and thus someone to be left alone.

It was perhaps predictable that Taeho’s newfound life would make him even more at home in Nature than he was before. He still enjoys surfing, but he finds himself spending more time among the trees he considers his kin. He has taken on work at a nature conservatory near the forest where he entered the Hedge. He gives tours of the area, and scouts certain sections of the park, making sure no one is disrespecting his charge. As an individual of his court, Taeho is often seen as a good place to seek an opinion to an otherwise contentious issue. Unless the question is itself about the protection or exploitation of nature, he will usually give a fair and illustrated argument in what he feels is the ‘best course’ of action. Even if it does not solve the issue at hand, most everyone leaves the discussion with a new outlook. It is only when Nature is involved that Taeho’s opinion will be prejudiced. Even to the point of irrationality. He has begun introducing himself as ‘Arjuna’, the more comfortable he gets among the other Changelings. It has not quite caught on yet, but Taeho is nothing if not patient.

Among the Men he once surrounded himself with, Taeho is seen as a likeable hermit, always losing himself in his surroundings, and rarely seeking out large crowds. When approached however, he proves himself a wonderful conversationalist, if sometimes preachy about his work. His intentions are pure however.

Internally, Taeho is not as cool as he composes himself to those around him. The fear of fire literally burned into him during his Escape worsens by the day. Seemingly trivial tasks he once took for granted are beginning to dampen him in a cold sweat. It is safe to assume he no longer owns any candles that smell of patchouli, and his S’more roasting days are over. Every time someone lights a cigarette in his presence he cannot help but flinch. And when surrounded by large crowds, even the Sun can seem too close, and too predatory. Even worse for his future in the freehold, are his feelings towards his Keeper and his time in Arcadia. In many ways his departure from his durance was accidental. He had not sought it out, he had not even wanted it. Every time he explores the mighty forest he works with, part of him hopes he might stumble back into the Hedge. At first, when meeting others of his kind, Taeho let it slip that he had enjoyed his time there, even longed for it on the occasion. The implications present in the reactions to this statement were clear enough. After hearing of other’s time in Arcadia, Taeho realized he must keep his mouth shut, and occasionally he will fabricate stories about his own durance, so that no one suspects the truth. And it is just one more thing chipping away at his Clarity, and perhaps his sanity.
