Changeling
True Fae Keeper
Mistress of the Red Crayon, The Chameleon ChildConceptSleep Paralysis, Little Girl Horror Movies, Alice in Wonderland
Mein
Her features are always slowly changing, though are always that of a pretty little girl. Moon-white skin becomes healthy pink, then chocolate brown. Hair goes from silver to gold, curly to straight. Cute chubby baby fat melts off to waif-like thinness. Normally, this process is so slow that it's difficult to notice, but when she becomes agitated her features can shift with nauseating speed.
Her voice is always the same though, a beautiful child-like soprano. Heartbreakingly sweet, you have to fight the urge to listen and obey her, simply to hear her tinkling laugh.
Despite this somewhat benign form, somehow her presence remains terrifying. As she cheerfully skips towards you, speaking excitedly of the wonderful times you’ll have together, your heart hammers and your breath come short and fast. You try to run but your knees lock, and all you can do is stagger. The last thing you see is her adorable face, smirking at you triumphantly.
Mien Blessings –
Mask As with her mien, she does not have a fixed form, beyond always being a cute little girl of some sort. No matter what form she adopts, however, her eyes slowly change colors, and her voice always remains the same.
Where ever she walks, birdsong stops and small animals freeze, paralyzed with fear.
Realm
Kanashibari's realm is not very large; a small house, surrounded by a garden. Like its mistress, the exact nature of the house and garden slowly changes. Unlike her however, the effect created tends to be jarring or ugly. At one point it might be beautiful Japanese rock garden, its focal point a neon pink swing set, surrounding a mud hut covered in tinfoil. A few years later it might become an Arabian tent made of newspaper and obsidian poles, circled by copper jack-o-lanterns and blooming cherry trees.
Durance
Strange as it sounds, Kanashibari does not actually seem to like change. Once she has molded a changeling into a pleasing form, they are to STAY in that state until she says different. Should one of her charges become clean when they were meant to be dirty, or harm themselves in some visible way, or wander away from their assigned place, she can become quite cross and will scold the errant changeling. While she is rarely violent with her charges, repeated infractions result in the changeling being prevented from moving, often by being bound in delicate metal chains. If the changeling somehow still keeps changing without her say so, she will often discard them in disgust. This can be an 'out of the frying pan, into the fire' situation, as she will sometimes put the changeling into some kind of hellish situation when she discards them, to punish them for defying her will. Other times she will trade them away to new Keepers, which is arguably worse.
Changelings Kanashibari primarily creates Elementals, because of her desire for permanence. Due to the variability of her realm, any type of elemental could be produced. The rarest kiths are Airtouched and Fireheart, as these elements tend towards change and movement. Still, one might see an Airtouched who spent their durance as a fan or a pinwheel, or a Fireheart who was changed into an electrical current to power a line of Christmas lights.
Beasts are also not uncommon, though the ones she makes tend to be both small and ornamental. She might have a few fish swimming in an pond, or perhaps a brightly colored lizard meant to be seen sunning on a rock. The one kith that she almost never creates is Hunterhearts, as their presence tends to be disruptive.
Sometimes the changelings she produces seem to be a mixture of both Elemental and Beast, such as a steel-shelled turtle, a crystalline bird, or a rabbit plushie. While one Seeming eventually becomes dominant, these changelings still generally feel pulled between their dual natures.
Frailties
Minor Taboo –
Must grant a favor to anyone who defeats her in dream combat.
If confronted in a dream, Kanashibari will generally retreat, unless antagonized. Anyone who does successfully goad her into dream combat is in for a nasty surprise, however, as Kanashibari is a master at Oneiromancy.
Minor Taboo –
Can only adopt the form of a little girl For some odd reason, no matter how hard she tries, Kanashibari can only look like a little girl. At best, she can look fourteen, though she usually looks younger then that.
Major Taboo –
Cannot use contracts on anyone who has not slept for three days
Very few people ever stay up for three days without nodding off at least once, and even if they did they’d be so tired that they’d be easy prey to her Somnolent Perfume.
Once, though, a clever changeling found out about this weakness, and was able to exploit it through repeated use of the Gift of Warm Breath.
He was found a week later, torn apart by a mob of homeless people. When the police interrogated the group, they said that the chameleon child had told them that doing so was the only way to make the nightmares stop.
Major Bane –
Caffeine
Caffeine in any form is poisonous to Kanashibari. Chocolate, Coffee, or Coke, it doesn’t matter.
Attitude Towards Escaped Changelings
Kanashibari's attitude towards the changelings who once inhabited her realm often depends on how the changeling in question left her realm. There is essentially three groups: runaways, discards and trades.
Runaways Runaways are those who escaped her realm on their own. She would be quite hostile towards them. If she had her way, these changelings would be dragged kicking and screaming back to her realm for punishment.
If she was not in a position to do this, or just didn't feel like it, she’d settle for doing something nasty. She can be quite inventive when it come to punishing those who defy her, though sometimes her actions can be more confusing then terrifying. Here are some examples:
- She might dream-poison a loved one and drive them insane.
- She also might kidnap the loved one in place of the runaway; perhaps leaving a ransom note promising to return them if the changeling
surrenders himself to her.
- She might warp a random mortal so they become obsessed with the changeling, using their mortal resources to stalk and harass.
- She might sneak into the changeling’s home and steal what she thinks is a valuable item (which may actually be something valuable, but is
more likely to be something like the bathtub or a ceiling fan), then draw frowny faces on the walls.
Kanashibari will generally have more then one revenge plan in the works, and tends to focus her attention on one changeling at a time.
She’s fairly distractable though, and sometimes abandons her assault part way through to pursue something more interesting. This doesn’t mean that she has forgotten about the changeling though; she may come back to torment him again at a later date.
Discards Discards are the changelings she threw away. As these changelings did not defy her will, and are even arguably in the right ‘place’ (i.e. not in her realm), she’ll be more laid back, perhaps even down right friendly. They’re not exactly safe though. If she likes what she sees, she might ‘forgive’ them, and try to take them back.
She’ll still be pretty friendly at this point, and a discard might be able to convince her that they still aren’t worthy to return to her realm, and need more time to think about what they did. They might also offer to help her get something she wants, and thus convince her that the best place for them is in the mortal world. If a discard is not able to convince her to leave him alone, and refuses to come back with her, he effectively becomes a runaway, and she will treat him as such.
TradesTrades are the changelings she traded away to other Keepers. Her reaction to these is up in the air. She might treat them like a discard, because in a way thats what they are. She might treat them like a runaway, because they're not in the proper 'place', i.e. in the care of the Keeper she assigned them to. Or she might ignore them completely, figuring that they aren't her problem anymore.
Her reaction could randomly change partway through an encounter. One minute she'd be chatting happily, the next attacking the changeling in a rage. Two hours later she may have forgotten the changeling completely. For changelings who do not remember their time with her, the sudden changes in attitude can be quite confusing.
